Overview

I have caught some great fish using this reel. This is basically a water sealed version of the okuma avenger. It is extremely lightweight, it has the power handle, and the baitfeeder. The body is comprised of high quality graphite, and the spool itself is aluminum. Also to note this reel also has a dual drag system to assist fast running fishing. The Okuma Coronado CDX really is the whole package. I would even say it is one of the best bait feeder spinning reels.

Reel Smoothness

Now let me clarify something before I start this. Most reels straight out of the box are going to be smooth. No matter what brand they are, they will almost always be pretty smooth. That is all there is to it. The important thing is how that smoothness holds up down the line. This is why I think it is important to give reviews after using and testing a reel.

I have owned this reel about 2 years now and it is as smooth, if not more smooth than when I got it. I keep pretty good care of it also, oiling and greasing it often. I have caught probably close to a thousand fish on it and it has never locked up. As far as being reliable, this reel is butter smooth even when I used it in sandy areas.

Baitfeeder/Drag

Let us start with the drag on this one. The drag is AMAZING! I have used other reels with choppy drag and this is nothing like that. Very smooth, It never gets stuck and it has so many levels. I still have yet to put it to the ultimate test with this, as I have not had very many big runs on this reel. It has been performing above my expectations for the last 2 years.

The baitfeeder does ok. It was working very well for the first year or so, but after that I started having issues. I was finding that sometimes when I turned it on, line was not coming out. It would be stuck and choppy coming off the bail. This to me is a major issue because I fish for some pretty hard biting fish. The last thing that I want is my rod getting dragged in. After messing with it for a while (setting and resetting it) it started working again but, I don’t want to have to do that every time it malfunctions. May I also note this does not happen all the time, but when it does happen its annoying. It is not the loudest, but you definitely hear it.

I have included some videos below of the Coronado CDX in action if you would like to check it out.

Reel Function

There are a good amount of reels out there that don’t have very good line tracing. Line tracing is pretty much how the line is applied on the spool when reeling. Some reels distribute it more even and others not so much. It is easy to have a bad reel that piles the line more toward the top or bottom of the spool. The Okuma  Coronado does not have this issue whatsoever. The line spread is dead even and I have not had any problems with line piling up.

Another feature that did not have its own header is the bail. It is SUPER STURDY! Not your typical small thin wire bail at all. It is very bulky and does not bend. It always stays locked in place, and is always smooth engaging and disengaging.

Overall

As far as a reel that is perfectly put together it is the Okuma Coronado CDX. You get the solid drag system that is water sealed, dual drag, and EXTREMELY SMOOTH. The bait feeder could be better but it does its job. The power handle in combination with the light graphite construction and the solid aluminum spool, it is a must have. The line capacity is amazing, it looks cool, and it holds up over time. I have caught shark, stingray, BIG catfish and even perch on this thing. It has been used and abused in the sand, mud, dirt and also salt and fresh water.

AVET SX 5.3 LEVER DRAG CASTING REEL

AVET SX 5.3 LEVER DRAG CASTING REEL

Overview

The Avet SX is a very fun reel to use. It is even more fun when you don’t use it for its intended purpose… This reel is made for trolling, and pitching baits off the side of boats BUT, I have used this from the bank 90% of the time. A solid construction with a one piece aluminum frame it what sells me. You also can’t beat made in the USA. The lever drag is very easy to use, and is easily adjustable. The power handle helps you gain line very fast, and compliments the reel very well. This thing is sturdy, a real workhorse, and it casts a MILE!

Reel Smoothness

I would be lying if I said this is the most smooth reel I have ever used. I must note that the purpose of this reel is not to be smooth, but to handle fish with power and efficiency. It is not going to be butter smooth reeling in fish, but it is smooth enough.

The casting with this reel is really where Avet shines. WOW! If you are an experienced angler, and you get used to this reel, it is just as good if not better than most surf casting reels. I have a 10 ft Penn rod that I could pair this with and boom there is my surf rod. The free spool is so incredibly smooth you have to be careful not to backlash. When the spool gets up to speed the moment only builds as your bait soars into the air. It isn’t the smoothest reel retrieve wise but man can this thing get out there.

Drag System

The drag system on the Avet SX is very good. The lever makes it very easy to adjust the drag level. A simple push up or down will get you to where you need to be. The spool tension knob is also placed right on the level itself as you see above. I think the drag on this reel does amazing at stopping big fish from running. I used this for shark fishing for 5 + years and it has NEVER ONCE locked up on me. It is smooth drag, not at all choppy, and can go quiet high for how small the reel is.

With a simple push down of the level you can engage the reels free spool. On the other side of the reel is a small clicker button. This clicker is pretty loud. I have been a good distance away from my rods before and still was able to hear it. Even with the clicker engaged the free spool is very smooth. Sometimes on very windy days I need to turn up the lever a bit so the wind doesn’t set it off. All in all, 10/10 for the drag because it is so easily maneuverable and effective.

I have provided some videos down below if you would like to see the reel in action.

Reel Construction

The Avet SX is made from a solid aluminum and steel shell that is one piece! This is very rare to find in reels now a days and it is something I personally love. Reel maintenance is very easy for the Avet. You do not have to worry about all the little parts and screws from other reels. Simply take the shell of and dissemble the lever (its super easy) and boom you’ve taken the reel apart. The shell helps with keeping debris out of the gears. I have had some times where things get caught inside, but I simply open the reel and take it out. Very easy.

Overall

This reel has sustained a good beating the last 5 years I have owned it. From sharks, stingray, catfish, halibut, striper, and rockfish this thing has had no problems landing fish. If you need a great reel that can give you the power from a boat or the bank, this is a great option. The lever drag is amazing, the design is flawless, and the cast ability is unlimited with the Avet SX. It has held its own for me and I am sure you won’t be disappointed with it either.

Reel Smoothness

Alright this may come as no surprise to some of you but the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur is extremely smooth. It has held up over time and still remains smooth to this day. Because of this smoothness, the casting is AMAZING. Out of all the reels I own, I haven’t had to worry about a backlash on this one. The way the drag system is set up, casting is effortless. I know a worry I have is how the smoothness holds up over time. Rest assured that the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur is very smooth, and stays smooth. No issues with the drag, casting, or free spool. It literally still feels the same as it did when I got it out of the box.

Drag System/Clicker

The drag is very good for the reel. I have yet to have any issues with it sticking or failing on me. The classic star drag knob is perfect for this reel. It is very easy to use for all skill levels, and also holds up against big fish. However, if you want to push your luck a bit and use this reel for bigger species (shark, stingray) you may need some more drag haha.

The clicker feature is extremely loud, so take that for what it is. I personally prefer a louder clicker so this works great for me. Once again I have had no issues with it jamming or locking up on me. It is located on the face of the reel, slim plastic button that isn’t in the way. It is very easy to turn off you just need to start reeling.

I have a few videos down below if you would like to see the reel in action.

Reel Construction

Now I know a lot of people are on the fence about this reel because it is made in sweden. I was right there with you, I love my american made products. BUT after putting this reel through the ringer time and time again, I was seeing the consistency. The aluminum body and spool are just crafted perfect. Although there are many screws holding this reel together it does not affect the performance. I have always been weird about my reels having to be one peice, but the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur is an exception. The clicker is placed well outta the way, and the handle is the perfect size. There is also a power handle option I must note. I have the regular handle on this model and it has held up great.

Overview

Weather I was rockfish jigging, shark fishing, trolling, baitfishing, this reel has gotten it done for me. The size is perfect, the castability is great, and it has lasted me over 8 years. It is so versatile and should not be limited to a certain kind of fishing. I just recently got another Abu and I love it. I will definitely be getting some more in the future. A jack of all trades reel if I say so myself.
